Okaloosa County will contribute $3.3M for Destin crosstown connector
CRESTVIEW ― After several years of waiting, Okaloosa County has approved an agreement with Destin to fund the section of the Destin Crosstown Connector from Beach Drive to Benning Drive.
The county will contribute up to $3.3 million in tourist development funds.
“It’s been a minute getting here, but we’re here today,” said Jennifer Adams, tourism director. “We greatly need this extension for us trying to get home at night and traverse around in the busy months.”
To alleviate potential bottlenecks seen in traffic delays in the spring or summer months, the Destin Crosstown Connector currently provides a second option for those looking to make their way east or west through Destin; however, a gap of nearly four-tenths of a mile remains in the roadway.
Over the past several years, the remaining section of the connector has faced many setbacks, including possible redesigns and delays.
Recently, Destin Mayor Bobby Wagner asked state legislators for $3 million for the final leg of the connector. Wagner said the state funds would “fill the gap” left by other sources.
The 0.4-mile segment will be a median-divided roadway with bicycle lanes, sidewalks on both sides, street lighting and furniture.
The project’s total funding is estimated at $10 million, with the county funding 33% of the project costs ― up to $3.3 million. In instances of overspending, Destin will be held responsible for the costs.
In other Destin news from Tuesday’s meeting, the County Commission approved an interlocal agreement for $400,000 to dredge the Destin Harbor.
