No. 8 Gators Cage Tigers in 16-10 Victory over No. 15 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 8 Florida lacrosse team (7-2, 0-0 Big 12) used a 9-2 second quarter to overcome an early three goal deficit to defeat No. 15 Clemson (6-4, 2-2 ACC) by a score of 16-10.

The Gators earned their third come-from-behind victory of the season, led by captain Kaitlyn Davies who totaled a career day with four goals, three ground balls, five caused turnovers and five draw controls. The four goals and five caused turnovers were career highs, while the five draw controls and three ground balls tied career bests.

Overall, the Gators had six players record multi-goal games, as Jordan Basso scored three goals, followed by two each from Gianna Monaco, Josie Hahn, Jenny Markey and Gabby Greene.

Frannie Hahn nodded a goal and a team high three assists, along with two assists from Monaco and one from Clark Hamilton.

UF moves to 4-0 this season when they win the draw control battle, outlasting the Tigers 16-12 in that category. Riley Zusi nodded a career high five draw controls, with help from Greene and Markey who nodded three each.

Georgia Hoey earned her fourth win of the season, tallying seven saves in the victory.

How It Happened

First Quarter

  • Clemson jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals at the 13:36, 9:42 and 9:00 marks, before Hamilton fed Monaco around the crease for the score, making it 3-1 with 8:16 to play.
  • The Tigers answered with 7:00 remaining, followed by Davies connecting on a free-position shot to cut the deficit to 4-2 with 5:00 remaining. Kayla McLeod recorded her third goal of the frame, giving Clemson a 5-2 advantage after one.

Second Quarter

  • The Gators scored the first two goals in the first 2:27 of the quarter, off scores from Davies and Josie Hahn (assisted by Frannie Hahn) to pull UF within 5-4.
  • Clemson answered with a goal at the 11:22 point, before UF used a 6-0 run in the next 9:18 with six different goal scorers.
  • Unassisted goals were scored by Monaco (10:24), Markey (8:46) and Davies (6:28) before Greene (4:40), Basso (3:20) and Frannie Hahn (2:04) scored goals off assists from Frannie Hahn and two straight from Monaco to give UF a 10-6 lead with 2:04 to play.
  • Clemson scored with 1:37 to play, before Davies scored her fourth of the game off a free-position shot with five seconds to play, giving Florida an 11-7 advantage at half. UF outscored the Tigers 9-2 in the second.

Third Quarter

  • UF scored first, as Markey scored her second of the game off an assist from Frannie Hahn to make it 12-7 with 10:49 to play.
  • Clemson connected on a score at the 8:06 point, before Josie Hahn scored on an eight-meter chance to push the lead back to 13-8 with 5:42 to play.
  • The Tigers scored with 1:36 to play to give UF a 13-9 advantage heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

  • Florida scored the first three goals of the quarter, courtesy of two from Basso and one from Greene to open up a 16-9 lead with 7:49 to play.
  • The Tigers got one back with 4:49, as UF earned the 16-10 victory.

  • UF improves to 1-0 all-time against Clemson and 13-23 against the ACC
  • The Gators totaled their sixth game with 15 or more goals
  • Davies has totaled five consecutive multi-goal games and scored her fourth hat-trick of the season, her five caused turnovers were the most in a game since Emma Wightman had six against Mercer on March 30, 2022
  • Basso logged her second hat-trick as a Gator and the 46th of her career
