SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 4 Florida State baseball team opened a three-game series at Notre Dame with a 16-9 loss in a back-and-forth affair on Friday afternoon in South Bend, Indiana.
Friday’s game at Frank Eck Stadium began the third weekend of ACC play and will continue with a doubleheader tomorrow. Due to inclement weather expected in the South Bend area on Sunday, FSU and ND will now play two games on Saturday, with first pitch of the opener at 12 p.m. ET. Game two will follow approximately 45 minutes following the conclusion of game one.
The Seminoles (21-4, 5-2 ACC) suffered their second ACC loss and first in a series-opening game through seven series in 2025. They scored nine runs on 13 hits with two errors while the Fighting Irish (14-9, 2-8 ACC) scored 16 runs on 15 hits with one error.
FSU scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, while ND plated one run in the fourth and fifth before taking the lead with five runs in the sixth. The Seminoles answered with three in the seventh to tie it, though the Fighting Irish regained the lead with one in the bottom half only for the visitors to again even the score with a run in the eighth. However, Notre Dame responded with eight runs in the bottom half before a lone run for FSU in the ninth.
Florida State hit six home runs in the defeat, the third consecutive ACC series opener FSU has hit four or more and tied for the most on the season along with a similar six-homer outburst a week ago at Miami.
Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey hit two home runs and registered his second career multi-homer game. He has nine in his debut season, the most in the country among freshman. Junior shortstop Alex Lodise, junior center fielder Max Williams, sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher and freshman catcher Hunter Carns also homered.
Williams’ homer was his team-leading 11th on the season and Lodise’s was his ninth, joining Bailey for second-most on the team. Carns now has five and Fisher three.
Lodise led the team with three hits and Bailey, Lodise and Williams all had two RBI. Five players had multiple hits.
Junior right-handed reliever Maison Martinez suffered the loss and is 0-1 on the year. Junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold allowed two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 4.2 innings.
Bailey’s solo home run down the right-field line gave FSU a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and it was 2-0 in the third thanks to Fisher’s leadoff homer to center. The lead was extended to 3-0 in the fourth when Bailey hit his second to left. ND got on the board on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1, but a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth got FSU run back to make it 4-1.
Notre Dame cut into the deficit with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth before a five-run sixth gave the home team a 7-4 lead, courtesy of a two-run and a three-run home runs.
The Seminoles quickly answered in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7, as Lodise doubled home one and Williams homered to center to drive in Lodise. However, The Fighting Irish used a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to regain an 8-7 lead.
Florida State once again tied it in the eighth at 8-8 on Carns’ two-out homer to center, but Notre Dame scored eight runs on seven hits, with three home runs, in the bottom half to take a 16-8 lead. Lodise led off the ninth with the game’s final home run for the 16-9 final.
