SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior left-hander Joey Volini threw his second consecutive seven-inning complete game as the No. 4 Florida State baseball team opened a doubleheader with a 4-2 win at Notre Dame on Sunday morning.

In seven innings, Volini allowed just two runs on four hits with a career-high-tying 11 strikeouts. He improved to 7-0 in seven starts this season and is the first Seminole starter to achieve the feat since Michael Hyde posted an 8-0 start in his first eight games in 2008.

Junior right fielder Gage Harrelson hit his third home run of the season for a seventh-inning insurance run as part of a one-hit, two-RBI day. Redshirt freshman left fielder Brody DeLamielleure also had a hit, an RBI and a run scored in the victory.

The Seminoles (22-4, 6-2 ACC) scored four runs on three hits with no errors. The Fighting Irish (14-10, 2-9 ACC) scored their two runs on four hits with one error. Sunday morning’s game evened the three-game series at Frank Eck Stadium, with the rubber match set for the second game of today’s doubleheader.

Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a bases-loaded hit batter with one out, but Volini got a strikeout and a groundout to escape further damage. Florida State quickly tied it when freshman first baseman Myles Bailey scored on a passed ball, though a one-out home run in the bottom of the second put the Irish back ahead 2-1.

FSU took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, as DeLamielleure doubled home junior second baseman Drew Faurot and scored on a one-out groundout.

Meanwhile, a double-play groundout helped Volini face the minimum in the third and he retired the side in the fourth on nine pitches with two strikeouts. Volini helped start a 1-3-6 caught-stealing to end the fifth. The southpaw struck out another two in the sixth after a leadoff single.

Harrelson doubled the Seminole advantage with his leadoff home run in the seventh inning to make it 4-2. Volini needed 11 pitches to retire the side in the seventh inning and complete his seventh win.
