Ting, Woad Begin Play In Augusta National Women’s Amateur

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The sixth annual Augusta National Women’s Amateur begins Wednesday. In the short, but incredible history of the event, there has never been a repeat winner, never been a golfer who has won the championship more than once, and never been two golfers from the same university who have won the championship.

Florida State’s Lottie Woad and Mirabel Ting are looking to make history.

The ANWA is one of the most highly anticipated championships of the year. It is contested in three rounds – two qualifying rounds at the Champions Retreat on April 2 and 3, and the championship round at the famed Augusta National on April 5. The event begins with 72 players who will all play the first two rounds. The field is then cut to the top 30 players who will enjoy a practice round on April 4 and final round play on the world’s most famous golf course.

With 49 of the top 50 amateur players in the world scheduled to play in the event, the 2025 ANWA is considered to be the strongest field in amateur golf history.

Florida State’s Woad, the defending champion, and Ting, who finished in a tie for eighth place a year ago, headline the field of players who will compete for the championship of the tournament as well as a host of exemptions in LPGA and future high-level amateur championships.

Woad won the championship last year with a one-stroke victory over Bailey Shoemaker with the third lowest stroke total (8 under par 208) in the history of the event. Ting finished in the top-eight with a 1 over par score of 217.

Woad, who will make her third appearance in the ANWA, enjoyed a practice round at Champions Retreat on Tuesday.

“I always love coming back here,” said Woad following her practice round. “It definitely feels a little bit different, but it’s all good things, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Woad begins play on Wednesday as the No. 1 ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking – a position she has held for since July 24, 2024 – a span of 34 consecutive weeks.

“It’s a great field; this event always has one of the best fields that we play in,” said Woad. “It’s great that we get to play against all of these people especially some people we don’t see in college — we get to test ourselves against them as well.”

Woad birdied three of the final holes a year ago to win the ANWA championship. Her finish to win the championship is considered historic in the incredible history of the Augusta National Golf Course.

Woad’s victory at Augusta allowed her to join a very select group including Arnold Palmer (1960), Mark O’Meara (1998) and Art Wall Jr. (1959) as champions at Augusta who birdied their final two holes to win by one shot.

When asked what she remembered most about her final round from a year ago, her answer was simple.

“The putt on 18 is the one I remember the most,” said Woad. “That one I’ve watched the most. I think the feeling was relief after losing the lead and then getting it back. I was glad that it was over and I had managed to do it.”

Woad, a first-team All-American in her first two seasons and the 2024 ACC Golfer of the Year, is enjoying another special year for the Seminoles. She’s earned two individual championships, seven top-three individual finishes, and is 24 under par for her junior season at Florida State.

Ting enters the ANWA as the No. 1 ranked collegiate player as well as the No. 3 ranked played in WAGR. She has been ranked among the world’s top five amateur players since November 20, 2024 – a span of 17 consecutive weeks.

While the junior is proud of her rankings, she insists that she is focusing on becoming the best golfer she can be, and not the highest ranked golfer.

“It means a lot,” said Ting of her No. 1 ranking among all collegiate players. “But at the same time I’m not trying to put a lot of pressure on myself that I have to win every tournament just because I’m the No. 1 player.”

Ting is approaching her second appearance in the ANWA, with a great deal of confidence.

“I’m striking the ball well,” said Ting following her practice round at Champion’s Retreat. “Everything has been working well from tee to green. I’m trying to enjoy every moment; not everyone gets to play Augusta National every year. I’m trying to have fun, and see where it takes me.

“Knowing the course helps,” said Ting. “The greens are similar to last year but a little bit faster. Hopefully I will get the chance play Augusta National for the third time.”

Ting most recently won the individual championship at the Florida State Match Up with a record-setting score of 200 and a record 16 strokes under par in leading the No. 4 ranked Seminoles to the Match Up championship for the tournament record fifth time.

“I’m really excited for Lottie and Mirabel to have the opportunity to play in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur,” said Seminole head coach Amy Bond. “Based on their performances this year, I believe they both have a legitimate shot of contending to win the championship.

From the coach who know the two stars better than most in the golfing world, Bond has watched as both Woad (9:44 tee time on Wednesday) and Ting (10:14 tee time on Wednesday) have prepared for the biggest stage in women’s amateur golf.

“Being the defending champion, Lottie has been looking forward to this week for a while,” said Bond “Her game is in a really great spot and I am excited to watch her play this week.”

Ting, who has won five of her six collegiate events this season, is also ready to compete against the best players in the world.

“Mirabel has illustrated that she can compete against the best players in the world based on her eighth place finish the ANWA last year,” said Bond. “Her play last year gave her the confidence and the experience she needs on this course to play really well.

“This is a great week for women’s amateur golf and I’m thrilled that we’ll have two Seminoles competing in such a prestigious event,” said Bond.
