No. 5 Gators Attack Aztecs Early, Cruise to 21-9 Victory
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Florida lacrosse team (10-2, 2-0 Big 12) used a 10-1 start to defeat San Diego State (5-8, 0-2 Big 12) 21-9 on Saturday in a wire-to-wire victory. It was Head Coach Amanda O’Leary‘s 250th career win at Florida.
The Gators flooded San Diego State with a season high 43 shots, compared to just 19 from the Aztecs. A season high 12 different Gators scored, led by three goals apiece from Gianna Monaco, Jordan Basso and Jenny Markey.
Gabby Greene, Josie Hahn and Ava Tighe totaled two goals each, along with single goals from Clark Hamilton, Frannie Hahn, Kaitlyn Davies, Gabbi Koury, Cate Isaacson and Caylin Luciano.
UF dished out a season high 15 assists, showcased by four each from Monaco and Basso. Hamilton logged three, Frannie Hahn totaled two, rounded out by one each from Davies and Koury.
Jenny Woodings and Cali Bishop each totaled five draw controls, as the Gators won the draw battle 19-14. Elyse Finnelle and Susan Radebaugh each corralled three saves, as Finnelle earned her fifth win on the season to improve to 5-0.
How It Happened
First Quarter
- The Gators got off to a 4-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, as Hamilton opened up the scoring with a free-position shot, before she assisted on a transition goal to Monaco, making it 2-0. Koury then used a dodge to her right to put it past the goalkeeper, before Hamilton found a cutting Davies who weaved her way towards the cage for the goal, giving UF a 4-0 lead.
- San Diego State got one back, before the Gators used a 6-0 run featured by a goal from Greene, two from Markey, one from Basso, one from Frannie Hahn and capped by another from Greene to make it 10-1 with 1:44 remaining. Monaco assisted on the last four goals of the run.
- San Diego State tacked on a late goal, to give the Gators a 10-2 lead after one.

Second Quarter
- The Gators opened up the frame on a 4-0 run in the first 3:29 of the quarter. Frannie Hahn assisted the first two goals to Josie Hahn and Gianna Monaco, before Basso connected on two goals, off assists from Hamilton and Koury to make it 14-2.
- The Aztecs answered with a goal, before Josie Hahn and Jenny Markey scored goals, from Basso to give UF a 16-3 advantage heading into half.
Third Quarter
- Monaco, Tighe and Isaacson opened up scoring in the third off assists from Basso, Davies and Basso again to give the Gators their largest lead of the game at 19-3 with 10:14 to play.
- The Aztecs scored with 4:09 to play, as Florida controlled a 19-4 lead after three.
Fourth Quarter
- San Diego State scored two consecutive goals, before Luciano stopped the run with 7:32 to play, giving UF a 20-6 lead.
- The Aztecs got three more back making it 20-9, but Tighe iced the game with 13 seconds to play, giving UF a 21-9 victory.
