TALLAHASSEE – The No. 75 Florida State women’s tennis team (13-7, 4-6 ACC) defeated No. 36 Wake Forest (14-10, 3-7) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

The Seminoles opened doubles play with a victory on Court 2, courtesy of Millie Bissett and Tina Li. The duo earned their first ranked win in just their second match together, defeating No. 78 Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum 6-3. Wake Forest earned victories on Courts 1 and 3 to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.

FSU dominated singles play, winning the first set on four courts. Kristyna Lavickova earned a win on Court 3 via retirement to tie the match 1-1. Mary Boyce Deatherage followed with a straight-sets victory, defeating Whitley Pate 6-4, 6-1 on Court 4 to give FSU a 2-1 advantage

Maria Juliana Parra Romero, the lone Seminole senior, shone on Senior Day, earning a straight-sets 6-4, 6-1 victory over Makayla Mills on Court 5.

With FSU needing one more point to clinch the match, the Seminoles trailed by a set on Courts 1 and 2. However, Eva Shaw and Bissett battled back to extend their matches to a third set. 

On Court 6, Laura Putz prevailed in a tightly contested first set tiebreaker and was tied 4-4 in the second set before winning the final two games and clinching the match for a 4-1 Florida State victory. 

Deatherage recorded her 15th win of the season and her second in ACC play. Putz improved to 8-3 overall and is now 4-2 in conference matches. Parra Romero earned her 11th win of the season and improved to 5-4 in ACC play.

The Seminoles will wrap up their regular season this weekend, beginning with a match on Saturday at 11 a.m. at No. 4 Duke. The regular season finale is set for Sunday, beginning at noon at No. 7 North Carolina.
