Softball Shuts Out Alabama State, 7-0, Tuesday in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In its final non-conference game of the regular season, Alabama shut out Alabama State, 7-0, on the road Tuesday night in Montgomery.

Mari Hubbard got the scoring started for Alabama (32-18) in the first inning over Alabama State (15-32), roping a triple into the right field corner to score a pair. A Salen Hawkins RBI single in the fourth made it 3-0 and the Crimson Tide added three more in the sixth on a wild pitch and a two-run double from Kendal Clark. Alexis Pupillo, pinch hitting to lead off the seventh, pulled a solo home run down the line and bounced it off the foul pole to make it a 7-0 game, which proved final.

Hawkins and Hubbard both had two hits in the winning effort, including a double from Hawkins and a triple from Hubbard. Pupillo’s home run was her seventh of the year and was the first pinch-hit home run for the Tide since Riley Valentine against Southeastern Louisiana in last year’s NCAA Regional round. Freshman Braya Hodges made her first career start in the circle, throwing 2.1 innings, with Alea Johnson (2-2) earning the win in relief behind her.
