No. 15 Alabama in Tie for Eighth after the Opening Round of the 2025 SEC Men’s Golf Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Jones Free and Nick Gross each carded rounds of 2-under par 68 to lead the No. 15 Alabama men’s golf team in Wednesday’s opening round of the 2025 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championships. As a team, the Crimson Tide ended the first round in eighth overall with a team score of 1-under par 279. 

Individual Highlights

  • Jones Free and Nick Gross each collected scores of 2-under par 68, with each recording four birdies and two bogeys on the day
  • The duo are tied for 14th overall entering Thursday’s second round of play
  • Connor Brown is tied for 40th at 1-over par 71, with Jonathan Griz a stroke back in 52nd position at 2-over 72
  • Dominic Clemons rounds out the Tide’s starting five as he is in a tie for 60th at 3-over 73

Team Highlights

  • No. 2-ranked Auburn (-16) stormed out to the clubhouse lead, holding a seven-shot lead over No. 7 LSU (-9) and No. 17 Texas A&M (-9)
  • No. 6 Oklahoma (-6) is in fourth, with No. 8 Florida (-5), No. 31 Georgia (-4) and No. 20 South Carolina (-3) rounding out the top seven, respectively 
  • Alabama is tied with No. 29 Mississippi State for eighth 
  • Hole No. 18 played as the toughest hole on the course, only yielding three birdies compared to 32 scores of bogey or worse in round one, with the Crimson Tide combining to score 6-over par (two doubles, two bogeys and a par)
