Gators to Host Texas Based Teams in SEC Home Opener Weekend

Florida will welcome two top-10 teams to Gainesville this weekend in their first home conference matchups. The Gators will start on Friday at 5 p.m. against No. 9 Texas.


GAINESVILLE, Fla.— Florida is set for a weekend of action as they host No. 9 Texas and No. 3 Texas A&M at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators will see a strong Texas squad on Friday at 5 p.m. and will then face No. 3 Texas A&M Sunday at noon.

GATORS LAST TIME OUT
Florida will return to Gainesville after a tough battle with the Bulldogs. The Gators were blanked 4-0 to then-No. 2 Georgia on Sunday afternoon. UF faced struggles early in doubles, with Alicia Dudeney and Bente Spee suffering a 6-1 loss on court one. A default loss on court three sealed the doubles point for Georgia. Freshman duo,  Nikola Daubnerova and Talia Neilson-Gatenby trailed 5-1 before the match went unfinished.

Singles play also proved to be a challenge for the Gators. Neilson-Gatenby was defeated 6-3, 6-0 logging Georgia’s second point. Noémie Oliveras was also defeated in straight sets, dropping her match 6-3, 6-4. The Bulldogs recorded the fourth and final point after a default win on court six.

 

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS

In Texas’ first year in the Southeastern Conference, the Longhorns have solidified their spot as one of the top teams in the nation. Individually Texas has No. 30 Carmen Andreea Herea, No. 38 Sabina Zeynalova, No. 69 Eszter Meri, No. 70 Ashton Bowers, and No. 78 Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo. In the doubles category, the Longhorns are represented by No. 29 Bowers and Anazagasty-Pursoo, and No. 41 Bowers and Zeynalova.

 

Texas A&M is currently undefeated in conference action and has only recorded one loss this season. The Aggies are led in singles by Mary Stoiana, the No. 3 singles player in the nation. Also representing in singles for TAMU is No. 15 Nicole Khirin, No. 51 Mia Kupres, No. 57 Lucciana Perez and No. 62 Daria Smetannikov.

In doubles the Aggies have two ranked pairs, No. 31 Stoiana and Perez, No. 68 Kupres and Smetannikov, and No. 72 Stoiana and Kupres.
