Alabama Honors 50 Years of Women’s Athletics with Weekend-Long Celebration
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama athletics department celebrated the 50th anniversary of women’s varsity athletics in 2025 with a handful of events that took place on April 25-26. The weekend events were a culmination of a year’s long celebration honoring five decades of female student-athletes who have left an indelible mark on the University.
In all, the athletic department welcomed back approximately 130 former student-athletes, coaches and staff who all helped pave the way for today’s student-athletes. Throughout the weekend, those in attendance were able to reconnect, reflect and commemorate the achievements that have shaped women’s sports at The University of Alabama.
“It’s exciting to be at a place like the University of Alabama during a time when we are celebrating 50 years of women’s varsity athletics,” Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne said. “Women’s athletics has only strengthened our athletic department and the accomplishments and strides that have been made should be a source of pride. I’m thrilled to have welcomed them back to campus – some who have not been here in a long time – and recognize their contributions to our department.”
The weekend celebration began with a welcome reception Friday night followed by an opportunity to attend the Alabama softball or baseball game that evening. On Saturday, the festivities began that morning with a campus tour, which featured an inside private tour of some of the athletic amenities including the Bill Battle Sports Science Center and Weight Room. The highlight of the day came at the Tailgate Celebration that afternoon which included a panel and meet-and-greet. The group concluded the weekend with a postgame on-field recognition at the Alabama softball game.
Fans who could not attend the festivities are still to make a contribution by donating to a women’s sports gift fund.
